The world has become very busy, with people finding less time to be active in their daily life. Obesity rates in Europe are on the increase, especially within the UK! This adds a greater risk of developing illnesses and conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and osteoarthritis.
National Fitness Day UK was set-up 3 years ago to encourage people to become more active. Taking place on the last Friday of every September, every person taking part pledges to incorporate at least 30 minutes of exercise into their day. Regardless of your location, at 1pm everyone is encouraged to participate in Empower Half Hour by doing 30 minutes of fun exercise.
In 2012 over 6,000 people took part in National Fitness Day after being inspired to get out from behind their desk, and get into shape. It’s not only about exercise though, National Fitness Day also raises money for Teenage Cancer Trust.
This year’s National Fitness Day is on September 27th, so there’s plenty of time to plan what to do if you’re considering taking part. It’s easier than you think to fit in 30 minutes of exercise, a day is never too full! Instead of working through your lunch, or sitting in the canteen, you could:
• go for a walk around where you work
• dance in a meeting room
• stretch in the park
• play short football match with your colleagues
• put an exercise DVD on at work and invite people to join the class
• get off the tube/bus/train a stop early and extend your walk to work
• ditch the car and cycle from home to the office
You don’t have to do all 30 minutes in one block if you really can’t fit it in. Get the kids involved by walking them home from school. To make it more fun they can try and spot local landmarks, or pretend to be an animal, taking on their characteristics. Getting up from the TV or games console is what’s important, making it fun is just an added bonus and may help you keep the habit.
Many people who have taken part in National Fitness Day before were surprised how easy it is to be a bit more active, many of whom continued with 30 minutes a day and now feel much healthier.
National Fitness Day is supported by partners Change4Life, UkActive, the énergie fitness Group and Sanofi Inspires.
