As a general rule there are 4 options for preventing hypoglycaemia and trying to stabilise blood sugar during exercise.


These are:

-Take in extra carbohydrates to match the amount used up during exercise (see ExCarbs)

-Decrease the amount of insulin taken with the meal before the exercise (see adjusting meal time insulin)

-Decrease the bolus insulin dose that is active during exercise (see adjusting bolus insulin)

-A combination of the 3 above (see combination method)


The trick is to work out which is best for you depending on what method of insulin delivery you have, what time you are exercising after a meal and whether you are trying to lose weight too!
